It's Springtime again!! Time to get out of your winter coat (ie. your comfort zone!)
Last year, I posted a series of videos of my son, Raif-Henok, and I going on our first camping trip. I talked about the idea of comfort zones and breaking out of them.
You see…I am not a camper. I have never camped. Don’t know any thing about scorpions, rattlesnakes, or tarantulas. Thankfully my brother, does and he gave me a quick (albeit terrifying) lesson!
He knows EVERYTHING. The problem was....he wasn't able to go with us!!!
On top of that, Raif and I were going camping with people we barely knew!
You see…Raif is homeschooled and during the year of the pandemic, we were in California. We had found a wonderful homeschool community with whom we were taking classes on zoom. As the threat of the virus decreased, we were offered more “in-person” opportunities and this camping trip was one of them.
But these were people that we had only seen on zoom — we’d never, you know, slept overnight with them in a dark outdoor campsite with nothing but a thin layer of fabric to protect us all!
We'd never, you know, had to wake them up in the middle of the night when I discovered a huge spider in my tent!
This camping trip was a great opportunity, but suffice it to say, I was WAY out of my comfort zone.
And then I noticed something — the REAL problem with feeling uncomfortable is it’s so easy to think that something has gone (or is going to go) horribly wrong. That the discomfort is there as a sign. A STOP SIGN. A stop sign telling you that you’re in the wrong place, but is that true?
By total coincidence, this came up in the book I was reading at the time. Secrets of a Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker. He writes…
“Get used to feeling uncomfortable, it is only when you’re uncomfortable that you are growing! When you feel uncomfortable, just say to yourself ‘Oh good! I’m uncomfortable! I must be growing!”
Wow! What a help that was! It really allowed me to breathe!
“I must be GROWING!” I said to myself.
“I must be GROWING!” I kept saying each time I was hit with a pang of fear.
I’m growing…getting better and better, stronger and wiser with each step forward. And I won’t let my mind trick me into staying still. I WILL venture out of my comfort zone. I WILL expand into the fullness of me!
What about you? Is there something inside you that fears new experiences? Something that fears being uncomfortable because you fear it means that you’ve done something wrong?
Will it help you to know that your discomfort is just a sign that you are growing?…You are expanding!…You are getting better and better and better!
Hold on to that!
Oh and Raif and I had an AMAZING time camping and nothing went wrong. We can’t wait to go again!
All my love,
Rhonda
