Not long ago, I was in the grocery store feeling shamed by a customer for asking a question about which lines were open. Read the story here.
The customer had been so rude and so aggressive that I was feeling furious as I went to the back of the LOOOOONG line to wait, breathe, and calm myself down. Then I started looking for the lesson.
I tend to believe that life is working FOR me -- that God (or Source or the the Universe) has got my back and is constantly putting me in situations, and around people, that allow me to learn and expand. So, in challenging moments (or, if I’m honest, directly following challenging moments) I try to look for the teachable part.
In that moment, I reminded myself that I have RESPONSE - ABILITY. I may not be able to control that customer's actions, but I have the ability to respond to them in any way I choose. Her actions are HER actions, but mine are MINE! And not just my physical actions, but my thoughts!
I reminded myself that I MUCH prefer to be someone who tries to help — someone who questions the status quo and looks for a better way — than someone who doesn’t and shames those who do. I took a deep breath and asked the universe "What is the lesson here?"
Just as I was thinking those words, a second woman approached me, “Is there a difference between the two lines?” she asked. “Nope” I laughed. "There is not."
“I mean” she continued “Is one '10 items for fewer' or something?”
I shook my head. "Nope." I said again.
Right then, an employee came up to us “Ma’am, if that’s all you have, you can step right over here to Customer Service." The woman looked at me and smiled “You see?" she said, "It always helps to ask?”
It was like the universe was speaking directly to me.
"It always helps to ask!' it was telling me. Thank you, Universe! Yes, yes, it does! Lesson learned! No matter what, it always helps to ask!
I believe that my ability to respond to the rudeness of the earlier customer with calmness and curiosity, asking, "What is the lesson here?" made space for the grace and the gift that I received afterward.
Have you ever responded to a challenge (small or large) by looking for the lesson? Let me know in the comments below.
All my love to you,
Rhonda
